Project 2: Room and Narrative

Nicolaes Maes, Eavesdropper, 1657

This painting features a young mistress, at the bottom of a staircase, is eavesdropping upon the dalliances of her maid and a suitor. Looking at the facial expression of the mistress, it shows the joyful mood of listening secretly though can't really see the actual scene. I find that the lightning effects in this painting is very interesting in a way that it explains the masses and the opening in the house. The placement of the window at the certain part of the house creates a sequence of tonal effects. Thus, it has a dark hall way from the entrance and a brighter one then a dark stairway. This light penetration reveals the location of each rooms and also the stair case, which can be seen to be the guideline to walk through the house.

Narrative
The play of light in this painting remains me of the role of light in photography world. Moreover, I am very interested in how the light is kind of giving a clue to the next spaces in the house which enhance the movement inside the house. Thus, my narrative is..site: in the middle of bush during winter time, when leaves are all gone.

"A box studio for an old retired man to enjoy his collection of photos in a different state of shade"

site: in the middle of bush during winter time, when leaves are all gone.
